CHAPTER 16
August 28, 1984
âREESE? REESE, WAKE UP.â
âLeave me alone,â Reese groaned, barely comprehensible. She snatched a pillow up and tucked her head under it.
âReese, come on, wake up.â
âLuke, Iâm sleeping.â Her words trailed off as she slipped back into sleep. Then she felt his hands jiggling against her back, trying to rouse her. The mattress springs creaked from the jostling.
She snapped out of sleep, tossing the pillow in the direction she thought he was. But he wasnât there. Reality slowly seeped in as she remembered her annoying twin brother couldnât have woken her. He was dead.
Her annoying twin brotherâs spirit had woken her up.
âReese?â Lukeâs voice was hardly audible.
âLuke? Where are you? I donât see you.â She crawled into a sitting position and reached over for the lamp on her nightstand, the one surviving lamp in her room. A low glow of yellow light brightened her immediate surroundings. No Luke. Was she dreaming?
âIâm here.â
His voice was next to her, but there wasnât a speck of his willowy form.
âI canât see you.â
âIâm here,â he repeated.
She nodded and dropped her head into her hands. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. âWhatâs up?â she said with her mouth still gaping from the yawn.
âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have gotten mad at you. I canât imagine what it would be like if I had lived and you had been murdered. Iâd be going out of my mind.â
They were quiet as the words settled around them. Reese wondered whether she would have returned as a ghost had she been the one to die. The thought should have freaked her out, but it only made her sad. She wasnât so sure she would have contacted Luke.
âLuke,â she started in a sleepy tone, âhow come youâre a ghost and not crossed over? Didnât you see a light or something when you died? Or Gramps? He wasnât there to greet you?â
âI donât remember. The first thing I remember after I was dead was seeing you look at my mural.â
His words woke Reese up a little more. âYeah, what was up with that? I didnât know you could paint that good.â
âI donât know. It was fun. I was going to surprise you with it. Do you like it?â
Reese nodded. She pulled her feet up and sat with her head propped on her knees. âI did. Itâs really good. Whoâs the guy handing the flower to Heather?â
Luke went silent, almost as if he werenât in her room anymore. How Reese wished she could see his facial expression. Why was he not visible?
âLuke?â she said quietly.
âIâm here.â
âDid you hear my question?â
âI did. I donât want to talk about it.â
âWhy not?â
âJust because.â
âIs it Gregory?â
âNo.â
âThen who is it?â
âReese, I donât want to talk about it.â Lukeâs tone had an edge to it, and Reese saw a shimmer of silvery sparkles to her right where his voice was coming from.
âWhy? Does it have to do with your murder?â
âReese, Iâm telling you I donât want to talk about it.â
She hesitated for a second, not wanting another display of aggression from Luke, but then changed her mind.
